SPFL Announces TOTS

The SPFL have today announced their Team of the Season,via their numerous social media platforms. The team is made up of 7 players from Celtic and Rangers, with the rest from surprise packages, Ross County and Hearts.

Star Man: Craig Gordon

Craig Gordon has been named as the teams Star Man, with the veteran goalkeeper having yet another exceptional season at the top level. The 39 year old was his side's key man this campaign, playing 36 games in the league this season, keeping 14 clean sheets and conceding 40 goals, saving 1 of the 2 penalties he faced.

Gordon ensured that the newly promoted side from the capital secured 3rd place in the league with ease, making their way to the final of the Scottish Cup in the process, along with guaranteed European Group stage football for next season. His stellar performances saw him roll back the years, earning him a new contract until the summer of 2024, when he will be just months away from his 42nd birthday.

The Defence

The aforementioned Craig Gordon in in between the sticks, with a back 4 of Calvin Bassey, Stephen Kingsley, Cameron Cater-Vickers and James Tavernier.

Rangers defenders Bassey and Tavernier both enjoyed great seasons, with the pair clocking up 64 appearances between them in the league, contributing to 26 goals. Tavernier was his usual self at Right Back, being a mainstay in the side and making his presence known in both boxes. Bassey proved to be a surprising hero for the 'Gers', enjoying a great second half to the season, impressing on the left side of defence and becoming one of the first names on the Rangers team sheet.

Cameron Carter-Vickers joined Celtic in the summer on-loan from Tottenham Hotspur and enjoyed a great opening campaign. The United States international played 33 games in the league, scoring on 4 occasions from defence, commanding the Celtic back line on the way to reclaiming the title.

This year was Heart's defender Stephen Kingsley's first in the top flight of Scottish football, with the 27 year old being a class above in the championship the year before. Kingsley made the step up with ease and came on leaps and bounds this campaign, establishing himself as a fan favourite and one of the best Full Backs, and free-kick takers, in the entire division. The Defender netted 6 goals in 33 Premiership appearances this season.

The Midfield

Rangers Midfielder Joe Aribo is one of the most talented and sought after players in the division, with his performances in Europe catching the eye in particular. Aribo was incredible for Rangers in the first half of the season, although he did tail off in the second half of the campaign, following his participation in the African Cup of Nations, as well as having to play out of position. Aribo scored 8 goals and grabbed 6 assists this season in 34 matches.

Celtic duo Callum McGregor and Tom Rogic had yet another impressive season in the middle of the park. The pair have been key players for Celtic for a number of years now, and McGregor in particular filled the hole left by Scott Brown exceptionally well. Between the pair they made 65 appearances, contributing to 16 goals, en route to another title win for Celtic. The perfect swansong for Rogic, and a great way for McGregor to have his first season with the armband.

The Attack

Ross County talisman Regan Charles-Cook was undoubtedly this season's biggest surprise package. The Dingwall fan favourite made 37 appearances, scoring 13 goals as well as assisting a further 2. The Grenada international was his side's key man, playing a massive role in County's rise to 6th in the table, narrowly missing out on European football. Charles-Cook finished top of the scoring charts in the Premiership last season, and was one of the best players in the league.

Celtic stars Kyogo Furuhashi and Jota join Charles-Cook up top in the forward line and rightfully so. Both signed in the summer, and the pair had an instant impact in Scotland. Furuhashi contributed to 14 goals in just 20 games, with his time on the field limited through injury. Jota scored 10 and assisted 11 in 29 Premiership appearances. Furuhashi and Jota were both key men for Celtic and some of the most exciting players in the league to watch. They were immense in the quest for the title, and had a massive role in regaining it, to become Premiership champions for the 10th time in 11 years.
